This week we talk about preparation. About facing down a challenge with proper foresight and training. Yaakov goes to greet his bloodthirsty brother Eisav and prepares with gifts, strategic placement of his troops, and of course, prayer.
Let’s break down these three categories. Sending gifts from one person to another hints to the relationships we all have with each other; giving and receiving in turn. Perhaps not tit-for-tat, but still quite a two way street.
Preparing Yaakov’s family, however, is the next step. No longer is this about the relationship between man and his fellow; this is about how Yaakov feels internally, the most personal of relationships. How he places his family shows us how he feels, where he is coming from and who he is most fearful of losing.
The last, and most important step is prayer. Yaakov turns to Hashem-the only One who can really help him-and davens that he should be successful. This is the relationship we all have, if we so choose, with Hashem.
In life we encounter each of these three relationships constantly. Sometimes we make a choice based on our relationships with our peers. Sometimes we make decisions based on our own personal goals. And sometimes, if we can be truly altruistic, we choose to follow His path, to mold our decisions to reflect Him.
Azi was a master at this. Azi knew that ultimately, every relationship really stems from the bond that one has with his creator, and so by default, in every circumstance, his decisions were able to mirror the will of Hashem, as outlined in the Torah.
Perhaps we can try this week to work on realigning our relationships so that each one brings us closer to the ultimate connection, our relationship with Hashem. Once that is clear, everything else will fall into place.
